Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who visited Cyprus, once again emphasized the existence of two independent governments on this island overlooking the Mediterranean waters and asked for resolving the existing differences through negotiation. During his trip to North Cyprus which has been under the control of Ankara for about fifty years, he said "Now there are two nations and two separate governments in Cyprus. The solution between the two parts should be negotiated based on sovereign equality". He also said that "peace and stability in the region will not be achieved unless Turkey and Northern Cyprus receive a fair share of territorial rights".
