20 July Peace and Freedom Day is one of the official holidays celebrated every year in memory of the Cyprus Operation carried out by the Turkish Armed Forces on 20 July 1974 in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Celebrated as a national holiday, 20 July Peace and Freedom Day is celebrated with official ceremonies every year. Celebration ceremonies are held in stadiums. Games, exhibitions and concerts related to the operation are held to the public. Most Northern Cyprus citizens hang the Turkish flag and the flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in their homes to celebrate. Also, high-level politicians and soldiers from Turkey participate in the ceremonies. The President of Northern Cyprus and the Speaker of the Northern Cyprus Parliament are present at the ceremonies as well. The activities begin with the ceremonies held at Yavuz Landing Beach, where the Turkish Armed Forces first stepped onto the island.
